Local scholarships first: start with your school and community

Quick answer

Your school counselor, your college's financial aid office, local foundations, employers, clubs and community groups offer awards that national platforms often miss. These awards tend to be smaller, but fewer students apply, and none of them needs you to share data with a platform.

Where do local scholarships come from?

Community foundations, local businesses and employers (including your parents' employers), unions, places of worship, service clubs, and your school or district itself. Colleges also give their own scholarships through the financial aid office.

How do you find them?

Ask your counselor or aid office for their list. Ask the groups your family belongs to. Search your town or county name with the word scholarship. Check local newspapers and library boards in the spring. Keep a simple sheet of names, amounts and deadlines.

Why start here?

Fewer applicants per award, essays that can draw on your own community, and no platform account. When privacy matters most to you, this path asks the least of your data.

When should you add a platform?

When your local list runs dry, when you want no-essay entries as a bonus, or when you are in college or graduate school and your options move beyond your hometown. The match quiz shows which platforms fit what you add.

Which platforms describe this path?

No platform needed. None of the platforms on this site covers school and local sources.

Frequently asked questions

Are local scholarships worth the effort if they are small?

Several small awards add up, and they are often renewable or less competitive. A short, specific essay about your community goes a long way.

Do I need a platform at all?

No. A platform is a tool, not a requirement. Plenty of students fund school with local and college awards alone.
